During the Peace unit of our class, we’ve been learning about the history of The Troubles and the peace process and exploring the political murals in Belfast and Derry, Northern Ireland – including: (1) the murals in and around the Nationalist Falls Road, featuring an Irish historical theme; (2) the Falls’ International Peace Wall (featuring large works of art depicting George W. Bush's Iraqi War, the Arab-Israeli Conflict, Spanish Civil War, and other global campaigns, past and present, as well as the Shankill side of the Peace Wall, featuring new artwork over the original graffiti and sectarian slogans); and (3) the Shankill and Newtownards Roads areas, featuring Loyalist murals reflecting those communities’ pro-British stance.
Students will peruse the sites below, spend individual and collaborative time cybersleuthing additional sites and sources, and participate in online and f2f discussions. At the beginning of their journey in learning about and building an understanding of and appreciation for this complex topic and unit of study, they’ll compile and organize, as they proceed, a categorized list of ideas, questions, sources and links. They'll be able to cull from this list, many ideas and sources for formative blog postings, summative VoiceThread work, and annotated webliographies for this unit.
This post will serve as an initial space for sharing reflections, ideas, inquiries, responses, and resources and drawing cultural and historical comparisons with similar conflicts, seen in a global context.
