SOLAS
In class today we talked a bit about traditional and contemporary performance practices in Irish Traditional music. We looked at a few videos in class and had a good discussion about what we were seeing/hearing/thinking/questioning.
We briefly explored: (1) Irish traditional music pub sessions; (2) Irish traditional music in contemporary settings; (3) sean-nós singing and sean-nós dancing; and (4) Irish set and step dancing – in “old-style” practice and in more contemporary practice, i.e. dubstep.
Students will continue their own cybersleuthing journeys to begin investigating/exploring things that personally resonate after having viewed videos in class and participating in a lively discussion, and pursuing individual cybersleuthing activities. They will compile and organize, as they proceed, a categorized list of ideas, questions, sources and links. They'll be able to cull from this list, many ideas and sources for their formative blog postings, their summative VoiceThread work, and their annotated webliographies. And, they will contemplate the ways in which they are engaged by the things they are learning about Irish traditional music – old and new, and how individual and group work is starting to augment and deepen their beginning understanding of an ethos about both traditional and contemporary practice of this amazing music.
